Show HN: I made a route planner app (update from 2018) Hello HN, I made the web app that helps plan your routes/road trips. It has so many options that I don’t know how to explain in simple words :), so I’ll try like this. What is cool about it is that your routes are shareable and hackable. The routes come in the format ie. https://ift.tt/33I8ggr, meaning we travel from London via Vienna to Istanbul, driving 5 hours daily while our total time budget would be 6 days. At given breakpoints (after 5 hours) we can explore the nearby locality in radius of some 30-40 miles, for lodgings/hotels, stores, camps etc. (the list is long, but currently limited to few). We can add the time we are about to spend on a given destination, and it will be automatically deducted from our time budget, so the limit will be flagged on the route. As you could assume, I use Google Maps Javascript API, which gives me geocoding, plain routes, nearby search, and other services than the app combines them to create in colorful itineraries. (colors are for distinction) https://camptarget.com P.S. Due to me being only developer, designer etc. it might not work well on all of the platforms, but it should work in the latest 2 version of ff and gc. August 9, 2020 at 12:19AM

Launch HN: Nestybox (YC S20) – Containers beyond microservices https://ift.tt/3ihto1i

Launch HN: Nestybox (YC S20) – Containers beyond microservices Hi HN, This is Cesar Talledo and Rodny Molina, co-founders of Nestybox (www.nestybox.com). Nestybox has developed a new container runtime that sits under Docker/containerd (it's a new type of runc) and enables containers to act as virtual-servers capable of running software such as systemd, Docker, and Kubernetes, easily and with proper isolation. The motivation came from noticing that containers are great at running microservices but struggle to run system-level software in them such as those mentioned above. That is, in order to run such software in a container, we needed unsecure privileged containers with complex images, custom entrypoints, volume mounts, etc., or alternatively a heavier virtual machine. This did not seem right. We studied the problem and noticed that the container abstraction was not complete enough, meaning that inside the container a root process lacked capabilities to perform certain low-level operations, the namespacing of procfs and sysfs had a few holes, there are limitations for running overlayfs-on-overlayfs, and more. To solve this, we decided to create a new container runtime that would set up the container in such a way that it could run system software easily and without resorting to privileged containers. That is, a user should be able to do "docker run -it some-image" and get a container inside of which she can run systemd, dockerd, or even K8s without problem (much as if it were a virtual machine). After lots of long days, we came up with Sysbox. It's a new type of "runc" and sits below OCI-based container managers (e.g., Docker/containerd). You typically don't interact with Sysbox directly, but rather use Docker (or similar) to launch the containers. Sysbox was forked from the excellent OCI runc in early 2019 and has undergone significant changes since then. It uses OS virtualization techniques such as always enabling the Linux user namespace, uid shifting via shiftfs, partial virtualization of procfs and sysfs, selective syscall trapping in user-space, setting up special mounts into the container, and more. It's written in Go. Here is a video: https://ift.tt/3fAQsGn Today we are happy to announce that we are open-sourcing Sysbox (Apache 2.0). You can find it at https://ift.tt/3fCCcgx . We welcome users and contributors, as it has plenty of room to grow and improve. There are plenty of docs in the repo describing how to use it and how it works. We think Sysbox is a very useful tool to expand the use cases for containers and provides an alternative to virtual machines in many scenarios, particularly for dev environments, testing, CI/CD, and even running legacy apps in containers. In order to pay the bills, Nestybox (the company we founded) will sell a version of Sysbox called Sysbox Enterprise Edition (Sysbox-EE). We are using an open-core model, such that Sysbox-EE is based on the open-source Sysbox and adds a layer of proprietary enterprise level features. We think this model will help us strike a healthy balance between creating useful technology that all can benefit from and keeping the lights on. Thanks for reading and we welcome your feedback. Best, -Cesar & Rodny August 7, 2020 at 11:00AM

Launch HN: Speedscale (YC S20) – Automatically create tests from actual traffic https://ift.tt/2Po7pcJTHE RIGHT PEOPLE https://ift.tt/31m5zhRTHE RIGHT PEOPLE https://ift.tt/33rSrdS https://ift.tt/33rSrdS

Launch HN: Speedscale (YC S20) – Automatically create tests from actual traffic We’re Ken, Nate and Matt, co-founders of Speedscale ( https://speedscale.com ), a tool that automatically generates continuous integration (CI) tests from past traffic. Carefully scaling rollouts to ever larger groups of customers is the safest deployment strategy, but can take weeks. Even for elite DevOps organizations up to 15% of changes to production can result in degraded service [1] [2]. We met as undergrads at Georgia Tech and come from a DevOps and operations background so we’ve seen this first hand. Each of us has over 15 years of experience building high-reliability systems, starting in the early days with satellite earth station monitoring. As interns we once wrote a bug that caused a 32 meter antenna to try to point down through the earth, almost flattening the building we were in. It was a great environment to learn about engineering reliability. We leveraged this experience to tackle monitoring Java app servers, SOA, SaaS observability and cloud data warehouses. What if we could use a form of observability data to automatically test the reliability of new deployments before they hit production? That’s the idea that got us started on Speedscale. Most test automation tools record browser interactions or use AI to generate a set of UI tests. Speedscale works differently in that it captures API calls at the source using a Kubernetes sidecar [3] or a reverse proxy. We can see all the traffic going in and out of each service, not just the UI. We feed the traffic through an analyzer process that detects calls to external services and emulates a realistic request and response — even authentication systems like OAUTH =). Unlike guessing how users call your service, Speedscale automation reflects reality because we collected data from your live system. We call each interaction model a Scenario and Speedscale generates them without human effort leading to an easily maintained full-coverage CI test suite. Scenarios can run on demand or in your build pipeline because Speedscale inserts your container into an ephemeral environment where we stress it with different performance, regression, and chaos scenarios. If it breaks, you can decide the alerting threshold. Speedscale is especially effective in ensuring compliance with subtle Service Level Objective (SLO) conditions like performance regression [4]. We’re not public yet but would be happy to give you a demo if you contact us at hello@speedscale.com. Also, we are doing alpha customer deployments to refine our feature set and protocol support – if you have this problem or have tried to solve it in the past we would love to get your feedback. Eventually we’ll end up selling the service via a subscription model but the details are still TBD. For the moment we’re mainly focused on making the product more useful and collecting feedback. Thanks! [1] https://ift.tt/2Po7iOl… [2] https://ift.tt/2XsQtpC… [3] https://ift.tt/31pKvax… [4] https://ift.tt/3gug5du… August 5, 2020 at 06:59AM

Show HN: HyperProphet – The Easiest Way Run FB Prophet at Scale https://ift.tt/3kdTeFa

Show HN: HyperProphet – The Easiest Way Run FB Prophet at Scale We are Anand and Raghav, the creators of HyperProphet (https://ift.tt/2Dq5nWV), a tool to enable developers to compute thousands of forecasts in minutes using fbprophet without worrying about infrastructure. Scaling forecast computation is a hard problem, often costs developers in productivity. Even established organizations spend a lot of time trying address this, but often the outcomes are not easy to use and manage[1][2]. We spent the last few years building a demand planning product for CPG and retail in which we had to forecast thousands of time-series. Computing such huge number forecasts in a reasonable time was a challenge. Facebook’s Prophet was one of our work-horse algorithms. Although Prophet made many things easy, it was still slow for a large dataset. Speed was critical for quick experimentation. To improve the speed, we built a small library to run compute on AWS Lambda. Encouraged by the early results, we built an in-house service HyperProphet which we are sharing with you today. The key features of HyperProphet are: - Fast: compute thousands of forecasts in minutes - Simple: switch from Prophet to HyperProphet by changing a couple of lines of code - Productive: experiment with forecasts in your notebooks without worrying about infrastructure HyperProphet is in early beta, and we are looking for more people to try it and give us feedback. We would love to see it used in diverse use cases and see how it performs. We see possible use-cases across multiple industries for capacity planning, anomaly detection, financial planning, among others. If you have any thoughts, we’d love to hear them in the comments!
