Show HN: Bog Gobbler Word Game https://ift.tt/r0ngOfE

Show HN: Bog Gobbler Word Game Two years ago my pandemic project was an online multi-player variant of Scrabble named Crossword Island Hopper where you capture territory by placing words on a board. It proved to be wildly unpopular. More recently I have been working on Bog Gobbler, which is a variant of Boggle where you capture territory by finding words in the grid. The territory-capture element is much more relevant in the multi-player game, but also affects the mechanics of solo games. This one is a little more popular and there is a daily solo challenge where everyone plays the same grid, with a global and personal leaderboard. You can go directly to the daily challenge at: https://ift.tt/Vv7Edlu If you know how to play Boggle the one thing you need to be aware of is that after the first word you find, all subsequent words must include at least one letter that you already "own". https://ift.tt/6ZItKac August 13, 2022 at 05:11PM

Show HN: Sematic – Convert plain English to structured data https://ift.tt/7imS6Dz

Show HN: Sematic – Convert plain English to structured data Hey HN! I would like to share the project that I've been working on for the past six months. It's called "Sematic", and it's an NLU API that parses plain english so that devs can really start start to understand the language of our users. In January I was trying to build a "text to bash script" product for my wife, as she is unable to use services like Zapier due to security reasons. I ended up being completely stuck on the first part of the project, which was parsing plain english to a data abstraction that I could code against. The largest problem I had was determining all the relationships between different objects/entities. I was hoping that Machine Learning could help me, but after going down some rabbit holes, building models, abusing GPT-3, etc, I found that no matter what, I was going to need proper error correction on the model's output. This prompted me to begin studying linguistics, and other no-ML rule based language parsing options. I still feel like there is going to be some ML in this project eventually, but for now I feel like I still have a lot of alpha to go by using some great libs like Duckling, and using old fashioned parsing techniques. My goal is to get Sematic to a point where devs feel comfortable with using it to add Alexa/Siri-like text understanding to all kinds of apps and websites. If you have comments or suggestions, I'm happy to chat more about it. Thank you. https://ift.tt/Kna3yvJ August 6, 2022 at 02:18AM

Show HN: Minimal Static Site Generator https://ift.tt/rWRdz8D

Show HN: Minimal Static Site Generator `pandoc-sitegen` uses pandoc and mustache templating to turn a bunch of markdown files into a minimalist site, while still allowing for things like an automatic list of blog posts. I was really frustrated with the complexity of most existing static site generators like Jekyll and Hugo -- it seemed like even a basic blog required an immense amount of configuration and provided tons of features I didn't need. I built this mostly for myself, but I'd love any feedback on it :) https://ift.tt/ClMSJwe August 5, 2022 at 09:25PM

Show HN: 3D Topography of Your GPS Track https://ift.tt/l7iY82t

Show HN: 3D Topography of Your GPS Track As a hiker and (ski)mountaineer I've always been a bit disappointed of how most apps fail to properly depict the topography while analyzing GPS tracks. (I know that Strava offers some kind of 3D view by now, but I still wanted to build my own thing) That's why I started working on https://cubetrek.com It's still very experimental, but you can give it test-drive now. Any feedback appreciated. It essentially renders your GPS Track as a 3D model within the topography. As an example, here's the Bishorn, a 4000 m peak in Switzerland: https://ift.tt/c3QNMte The front end is based on Babylon.js, D3.js, the back end is Spring Boot and Postgresql with PostGIS. There's a summary on how it works at the very bottom of the homepage. https://cubetrek.com August 5, 2022 at 01:57AM

Show HN: Score In URL, a sheet music editor that store everything in URL https://ift.tt/pjGKQcH

Show HN: Score In URL, a sheet music editor that store everything in URL I'm excited to publish my new project, [Score In URL]( https://ift.tt/4PitGCR ), a simple, privacy-friendly, sheet music sharing service, where the entire content is encoded in the URL itself as a query parameter. It comes with a decent text editor, rendered score, and audio. The sheet music is notated with ABC Notation, rendered by abcjs. This project is heavily inspired by [Hashify]( https://hashify.me ), which encodes a markdown document into its URL. The code is here: https://ift.tt/mq8ucHC I made this with ViteJS and Tailwind CSS, and hosts it with GitHub Pages. I'm not proficient in front-end development at all, my past experience in this area being basically vanilla HTML/CSS, with a tiny bit of JS. This is in fact my first try at using any front-end framework. I sincerely welcome all feedback. The idea came to me when I tried to convey the idea of an exercise in a music forum. No forum I've used have native support for any form of sheet music. It's either typing "CDEFGAB", which isn't very readable and scales horribly for anything complex; or sharing an image, which is tedious because you have to open up an engraving software, export, and upload. And none of those approach has audio. You can read more about my thoughts [here]( https://ift.tt/1dqnv4f ). https://ift.tt/ghDUXn5 August 5, 2022 at 01:19AM

Show HN: PiBox: a tiny personal server for self-hosting https://ift.tt/1fPOJ4E

Show HN: PiBox: a tiny personal server for self-hosting Heya HN! We've built a Raspberry PI CM4 based SSD NAS for home hosting. We built it as a part of KubeSail.com - which is a platform aimed at making self-hosting easy and at making the technical bits (tunneling, backups, updates, etc) as easy as possible. You may have seen plans for this about 9 months ago on HN, but we're finally in full production! I'll be booking tickets to fly out and help assemble the 2nd batch in a few days - we're effectively a two person computer company, which is a lot of fun and a crazy amount of work. Our mission is to make home-hosting a website, an app, or just personal photos a reasonable alternative to SaaS products. https://pibox.io/order August 1, 2022 at 11:04PM

Show HN: International Legal Dictionary https://ift.tt/qI7b3FO

Show HN: International Legal Dictionary I'm a pro bono attorney, and have been really interested in making the law easier to understand. I also see a ton of government resources online in varying degrees of usability. And for sure, there's no interoperability between them. This is an international legal dictionary, an experiment in improving the situation: glossaries are scraped and parses from official sources: https://ift.tt/i28qgst . The results are saved as datasets in well formed JSON with Dublin Core metadata: https://ift.tt/PqMz5LE I add Library of Congress subject headings to the sources, to enable filtering (still to come). The web app is basically an old-school mashup, which I've always liked. Another experiment is using the Dale-Chall readability formula to improve the reader's experience. Here's an example of it at work: https://ift.tt/wX7I2hL This is an experiment, using readability as a relative metric. I.e., not extracing an absolute grade-level score as its normaly used. Instead, using it to compare different definitions of the same phrase. My theory is, there's strong scientific validity for this use, even when applied to very short passages: All I simply want is to figure out, "Which is more readable? Passage A or B?" And then, my code sorts the definitions in order of readability to (theoretically) produce a newspaper-article-like effect: A reader can read the first couple of sentences to get an overview of the story. https://ift.tt/myeKnPO August 1, 2022 at 03:11AM

Show HN: Rentaflop – Render your Blender projects without sacrificing quality https://ift.tt/nS2YTbF

Show HN: Rentaflop – Render your Blender projects without sacrificing quality Hi HN, My name is David Sokol, and I'm the founder of rentaflop (https://rentaflop.com). We're a crowdsourced render farm aimed at making Blender rendering fast and affordable. If you've used Blender, then I'm sure you've experienced the pain of waiting around for your animations to render. You've probably even had to sacrifice the quality of your work to reduce your render times. I've been there too. If you're like me, then you're also disappointed with the alternative solutions: spending thousands of dollars on graphics cards or using prohibitively expensive cloud render farms to get fast render times. Our solution to this dilemma is to leverage low opportunity cost hardware from around the world to allow Blender artists to render their projects quickly, affordably, and without compromising on quality. Since most graphics card owners aren't utilizing their hardware to do valuable work 24/7, we provide them with a way to make money without lifting a finger, while lowering the cost curve for 3D rendering. We're currently doing a private beta. If you'd like to get early access, check out our site (https://rentaflop.com) and join the waitlist. If you're a graphics card owner who wants to help Blender artists while earning money, reach out to support@rentaflop.com and we'll help you get set up. Please leave a comment below, we'd love to hear your thoughts :) July 31, 2022 at 10:59PM
